Pro Bono & Community Service

At Gray Plant Mooty, we believe that the privilege of practicing law comes with a responsibility to ensure that everyone has access to the legal system, regardless of resources. We take pride in using our legal skills to help people in need.

To encourage our commitment to pro bono work, we have a goal for our lawyers to devote at least three percent of their collective billable time to pro bono work each year. We are pleased to have met that goal in 2010.

We do pro bono work in many different areas, including:

  1. Legal Advice Clinics – We staff several clinics including Legal Access Point,  the Housing Court Project, a Debtor-Creditor Counseling Program, and MSBA  Wills For Heroes clinics.
  2. Asylum and Human Rights – We have handled many asylum claims for people  seeking to avoid persecution in their home countries. We also assist advocacy  organizations working on human rights issues around the world.
  3. Impact Litigation – We handle cases addressing systemic issues, and also  criminal matters. For example, we have represented a group of individuals  asserting constitutional violations by  the government in large immigration raids in  Minnesota communities.
  4. Transactional Projects – We handle many projects, from real estate acquisition  to employment issues, for nonprofit organizations. We also assist individuals  setting up new businesses and with estate administration.

Gray Plant Mooty is also deeply committed to community service. Through leadership and involvement in charitable organizations, our lawyers, paralegals, and staff strive to make a positive difference in our local and national communities. Our firm has participated in projects and organizations such as Hats for Hope, Jeremiah Program, Habitat for Humanity, Everybody Wins!, United Way, Walk MS, Hearts & Hammers, Share the Spirit Project, and Memorial Blood Centers.
